Hidden in the folds of the Leigong Hills, Xijiang is thought to be the largest Miao village. There are more than 1200 Miao families in it. It's still not all that large--more a large cluster of houses than a real town. It's a superly picturesque place, set in a natural basin and bordered by paddy fields drenched in green, with wooden houses rising up the hillside. The town is the site of a major Miao New Year festival at the end of the 10th lunar month, when there are lusheng competitions, dances, bullfights and feasting. Local Miao wear their best silver-horned headdresses. The festival is held over five days, with most activities taking place on the basketball court in the centre of the village. There are also plenty of pleasant walks around the hillside and villages.
