The rich minority areas of south-eastern Guizhou, technically the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, are surprisingly unexplored by Western travellers. The forested hillsides and river valleys hide a rich mesh of Miao,Dong, Shui, and Gejia villages, many of which hold epic weekly markets and annual festivals and remain a unique way of life relatively untouched by China's mordernising mania.
The best way is to start your trip in Guiyang, passing through Kaili , visiting the villages around Kaili, and end your trip in Yangshuo, relaxing by a coffee there. But we must tell you that, there are no places to change money in Kaili's outlying areas until you arrive in Guilin, so bring plenty of Chinese RMB with you. It is also hard to use ATMs on the way to Guilin from Kaili, since most ATMs do not often work or are broken. Possible to change money: Guiyang, Kaili, Guilin

If you are interested in catching a glimpse of the ethnic diversity that rural China has to offer and do not mind roughing it a bit, this can be one of the most rewarding places to visit in the South-West. Little English is spoken, there are few concessions to Western tastes and you are not likely to bump into many other travellers, but if that's your kind of thing, then get the map out and catch a local bus when you have enough time for the trip.
