Maolan - The Heart of Guizhou's Karst Wonders.
Guizhou, often referred to as the "Kingdom of Karst," is a haven of natural, untouched beauty, home to awe-inspiring landscapes like endless peak forests, deep gorges, and magnificent caves. One of the gems in this region is Maolan, located in Libo County, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It lies at the heart of the South China Karst World Natural Heritage site, resembling a stunning green jewel when viewed from above, situated at 25°N latitude. Maolan is recognized for its titles such as "National Nature Reserve", and "World Natural Heritage".
The karst landforms stand among the mountains, water, forests, caves, waterfalls and rocks. It is a wonderful place for catching a glimpse of untouched nature, while also serving as a paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The total area is 21,100 hectares, with a forest coverage rate of 87.54%. It consists of the karst forest area in the southeast, the Dongting Five-needle Pine Protection Point in Jialiang Town, and the Xiaoqikong Karst Forest Science Tourist Area.
It is a rare remaining forest with strong primary subtropical karst characteristics in China and even in the world. It has been included in the national-level nature reserve in 1988, joined the International Biosphere Protection Network of UNESCO in 1996, and was listed in the World Heritage List in 2007.
